RAL Classic® System

Short Description

The RAL Classic® color system is one of the oldest and most established color standards in the world. Originally developed in 1927 by the 'Reich Committee for Delivery Conditions,' it was designed to define colors in industry, crafts, and architecture precisely. Since then, RAL® has stood for reliability, reproducibility, and color accuracy in all areas of application.

The RAL Classic® system now includes 213 standardized colors that serve as a global reference. Each color is identified by a four-digit number and a unique name (e.g., RAL 7016 Anthracite Grey). Classification is based on color families – yellow, red, blue, green, gray, and earth tones – allowing systematic orientation.

Usage

The RAL® color system is used wherever colors must be precisely defined and reproducible – e.g., in industry, architecture, mechanical engineering, furniture, and vehicle design. It serves as a common language between planners, producers, and clients to avoid misunderstandings in color selection.

In practice, RAL colors are mostly implemented as paints or powder coatings. They are used on metal, plastic, and facade surfaces. Many manufacturers worldwide produce paints, coatings, and materials according to RAL specifications – a key advantage for design consistency and reordering.

Background

The RAL system was created because there were no uniform color specifications in the 1920s. With the first RAL catalog, colors could be standardized and documented for the first time – independent of subjective perception. Today, RAL is a brand for quality standards in color and surface finishes.

Besides the RAL Classic series, there are other variants:

RAL Design System Plus: For designers working with over 1,800 systematically arranged shades – ideal for architecture, interior design, and corporate identity.
RAL Effect: Contains 420 solid and 70 metallic colors using water-based pigments for sustainable coatings.
RAL Plastics: Transfers RAL colors to plastic samples to facilitate color comparison between materials.

A special advantage: RAL colors are light- and weather-resistant and meet high outdoor standards. Many building regulations, standards, and corporate design guidelines refer directly to RAL definitions.

Tips for Architects, Designers & Manufacturers

Consistent color communication: Use RAL codes in specifications, material lists, and design briefs to ensure all parties use the exact same color.
Check color effect in context: RAL colors may look different depending on the surface (matte, glossy, textured). Always review samples under real lighting conditions.
